From the Archieves: Upcycled Brown Paper Basket

Today I’ll be sharing one of my old posts.  But it’s one of my favorites, and one of the most popular ones that I’ve written.  Enjoy!

In the midst of babies crying, toddlers whining, and dogs barking, I hear a beautiful sound…the doorbell.  Normally, I curse this sound because it makes my baby cry, wakes up my toddler, and makes my dog bark.  But that was already happening, so I welcomed the distraction.  But when I peered out the window, no one was there.  Now, this has happened to us before, when we got Boo’ed at Halloween….a candy version of Ding Dong Ditch.  But this time, when I opened the door instead of candy….BOXES!  Pampered Chef and Thirty One boxes to be exact!

So as exciting as opening all those boxes was (and no, it wasn’t all for me….I’ll have to redistribute to all the lovely ladies who bought all that stuff and allowed me to get all of my stuff for FREE!!), the packaging in these things was ridiculous!

And since I made a pledge to my good friend The Lorax, to speak for the trees, I thought maybe I’d find a way to upcycle some of this packaging.  A long time ago (before the days of pinterest unfortunately!), I had seen a cute use of recycling newspaper…..cutting into strips and weaving it into a basket!  Reminded me of Girl Scouting….

So, I decided to try it with some of the brown paper from my Pampered Chef boxes.  It was in pretty rough condition, but I found some good strips, and cut those into approximately one inch strips.  Then, I folded each of those strips in half and used white thread to sew down each side with 1/8″ seam allowance.  I figured that would make the brown paper look fabric-like when the basket was finished.

Basket weaving the bottom was the easy part.  Just make sure you are adding strips equally on all sides to keep you basket even.  I started with strips that were about 4 feet long, having no idea how big the basket would end up being.

About halfway through making the bottom, I realized that I only needed the strips to be about half that big (I wanted my basket to be about a foot squared, to hold my fabric scraps).  So I slid everything over and cut about two feet off the end of each of my strips.

When I decided that the bottom of my basket was big enough, I started on the sides.  I bent all the strips upwards, and then took a new strip and weaved it around the side (under, over, under, over….just like the bottom).  I used a little piece of tape to hold the end of the strip to make it easier to weave.  Let me tell you, it wasn’t pretty.  Upcycled Brown Paper Bag into Basket from Palmettos and Pigtails

I thought about quitting.  The strips were everywhere except for cooperating.  But I used tape liberally for those first couple of strips around the sides.  (I did take the tape off later, so just use it to tack).

But after about the third layer of weaving around the sides, everything kind of fell into place and starting looking like a basket!

With every layer I added, I was able to adjust the lower layers and make everything a little tighter and neater.  I was also able to take off the tape, as the other layers helped hold the ends in too.  I just tucked the ends into the weave.  When I decided the sides were high enough, I stopped adding strips around the sides, and just tucked the ends of the basket into the weave.  You can see some of the places where I did that in this picture.

Maggie’s New Bed

Have you met Maggie?

She is our five year old lab mix and third child.  No, really!  She is very similiar to our other two…

She requires lots of physical attention, and whines when she doesn’t get it.

She is hungry and thirsty all the time and often finds and eats Cheerios off the floor.

She has to go to the bathroom every ten minutes.

She is very affectionate with her stuffed animals and toys.

She loves to play!

Maggie drives us crazy sometimes with her paranoid whining and pacing the house, but she is a great dog…and is so gentle around the girls.

But….she can get pretty stinky.  And her old bed was spot-wash only.

Needless to say, it was time for a new bed!  And it just so happened that we FINALLY decided on fabric for our couch cushions and curtains for the living room and kitchen.  So when I decided to get Maggie’s bed custom made by Pawsitive Style, I decided it should coordinate with our living room.

And it turned out beautifully!

And Maggie loves it too!

And now you have a sneak peek of something else I’ve been working on!

Easter Bunny Bowling

Well, aren’t I the crafty one lately!!  I told you I have been working on lots of things….  I think it must be my daily schedule.  I seem to be more on track lately and better able to manage my time (which gives me more ME TIME!). You know that we have put ourselves on a budget, but did you know we are also on a diet?  I’ll have to post more about that another time (just know we have lost almost 10 pounds each within the last month!!).  Because of these two factors, I have been searching for some creative, cheap Easter basket stuffers.  I didn’t want to fill the girls’ baskets with tons of candy and junk, and didn’t want to spend a ton on little Easter-themed junk either.  So what did I do?  I turned to Pinterest, of course!

I found a free pattern for these cute little guys on etsy….free! courtesy of The Long Thread .  Hers were solid colors with patterned ear-insides.  But I had some beautiful spring scraps that I decided to use instead.

And I had the hardest time finding a hard wooden ball to serve as the bowling ball.  I finally found one at A.C. Moore….but it’s actually a doll head, and a little flat on one side.  So I plan on sanding it down a little more so it rolls better, and then painting it brown and modge podging something cute on….TBD.  I just have to find a naptime when both girls are down to break out the paint and glue!

I chose six fabrics, but made sure that they were grouped in pairs that matched, because I wanted the ears to coordinate with the bodies.

If you try this project, here are a couple of hints: Although I loved the darker, busier patterns (my reds!)….it’s much harder to see the embroidered faces because of this.  However, the lighter fabrics made the dark embroidery floss show through….so make sure to trim if you use lighter fabric.  I had planned to add a little something for a tail, but I forgot…so let me know if you try this and add one-I’d love to see your ideas!  Also, I did use a 1/2 cup of rice like the directions stated, but I filled the bunnies up with a little more stuffing than she prescribed….to about an inch from the bottom.  And finally, I don’t really like my ears.  I was worried about them being too short, so I was stingy on the seams….when actually the opposite happened and I think they are a little long (they have a hard time standing up!).  So feel free to extend their seam allowance a little (maybe to 1/2″)…and maybe your bunnies’ ears will be perkier!

Here’s the direct link to the pattern

I’m linkin’ up this week…and I have some new linky parties so be sure to check them out for other Spring inspiration!

New Stuff in My Etsy Shop (And a Coupon)!!

Another shameless plug for my Etsy shop!  In addition to a couple of new burpcloth patterns, I’ve added some headbands too!  And I’ve started making a little doodad which I call a Door Husher.  I literally could not think of a better name.  Please, please help me name the things!!  This little thingy has been a lifesaver in our house.  It allows me to sneak in and out of Amelia’s room without having to turn her squeaky knob, or loudly latch the door.  It’s made out of a thick fabric, and has elastic on either side that goes around the doorknobs.  The fabric sits on top of the latch, and prevents the door from latching…making it easy for me to just gently (and quietly) push open her door.  Comes in very handy too, when I have my hands full and I can just bump the door with whatever is free and it will open!

Here are the new fabric choices for the Door Hushers and for the burp cloths….these make great gifts for new moms!!

Here is the new burpcloth pack….it’s named Magnolia.  And I was so happy to send one to my new baby cousin Cameron, who was born a couple of weeks ago in GA!!

I also sent Cameron’s mom, Heather, a new headband…hopefully it makes her feel pretty and feminine!  The best thing about thm is that they are completely interchangeable…they can fit on any headband, and look great on moms and kids alike.  I just love these…I wear one almost every day!

These are just a few of the choices I have up for sale….check out my Etsy Shop to see the rest!  And remember, I can make custom orders for any of my items, so if you have a specific fabric, color or team you’d like me to feature, just let me know!

Thanks for visiting!  (Tell your friends!!)  Oh, and because you stuck with me til the end of my post, use the coupon code SPRING on your order for 10% off!  Offer good for a limited time…so hurry!

Decor for our New Nest!

Good Morning!

After a very frustrating weekend full of false labor, I’m happy to turn my attention to decorating my new house!  I’ll try to get some pictures up soon, but let me tell you….the house looks AWESOME!  It has walls.  It has siding.  It has cabinets and sinks and crown molding!!!!!  In short, it is looking like a real house now!  Since Loo Loo is here, I decided to take advantage of her last Thursday and take her decor and furniture shopping.  We went to several fabric stores looking for color inspiration (we wanted most of the rooms in the house to “coordinate” using like colors and color families)….this is all new to me, and this is why we need Loo Loo.  I do not have a good decorating bone in my body.  Sure, I know what I like (See my Pinterest Page at the top), and what I don’t like….but when it comes to starting from scratch and being creative…..I just don’t have it.  But, I’m an excellent copycat! =)

Here are some of the fabrics we liked (keep in mind we were looking for our color scheme…something to base pillows, rugs and curtains off):

Obviously, we were drawn to beiges, light blues, teals, dark blues and whites.  We decided that with our SUPER dark (almost black) cabinetry in the open kitchen, VERY dark (like expresso) furniture and KINDA dark (like a maple color) floors….we needed some lighter colored fabrics with dark and light prints.  So here are the specific fabrics we chose…

We wanted to keep a little bit of the red, so we’d be able to use some of our current accent pieces (vases and such) and it would still go with the mostly blues theme.  We also plan on making or recovering our own pillows and using fake roman shades in the hallways with the striped fabric used as ties against kind of a linen or canvas fabric (in a lighter beige color) for the stairwell windows.  We’ll also throw in some solid colors too.

As for furniture, our only MUST HAVE pieces will be a white dresser for Jayna (which we will probably get from IKEA, to match her bed), barstools for the kitchen counter and a hutch/sideboard piece for the breakfast area for more storage.  We went to Nadeau, our favorite furniture store and found the PERFECT hutch….tall enough that we won’t have to worry about finding art or a mirror to hang above, deep enough for some of my massive platters and pitchers, and the EXACT color to match all these blues we found!  It’s even white washed on the inside to provide a little more rustic feel!

But alas, nothing is going right for me this weekend.  Apparently we were not meant to be together.  We found it on Thursday, needed to mull it over for a couple of days (and focus on crazy false labor!), and when I called to place it on hold this morning…..was told that it SOLD on Saturday.  And no, they don’t order more….these are all one-of-a-kind pieces.  So we are back to square one for kitchen storage. =(  So sad.

We also considered a couple of little console tables for our entry hallway, but decided that there really isn’t room for anything there.  But I still think they are cute!

We also found this piece (before we saw the blue hutch), that we considered….same price range, but it would need to be refinished as it had a greenish paint tint to it that wouldn’t have matched at all.  It also didn’t have as much storage as the other one, and no glass windows to prevent little hands from grabbing what I need to store on the shelves.

I’m seriously considering making the loft in our new house into my crafting/sewing room.  So when I saw this table….I just about died!  I love it!  It’s huge, but manageable for our not-so-big loft, and it has drawers on both sides for lots of storage.  I also love the antiqued white color, I’ve always wanted that in my house, but it doesn’t go with my DARK furniture downstairs.  Here’s my chance!  I guess I need to make a decision quickly before it sells too!

That’s about it for our finds this week, but I’m hoping to get back out there on Wednesday (provided Amelia doesn’t show up before then) with Loo Loo and look some more….still hunting for bar stools!  Tomorrow is Meet the Teacher and Thursday is the first day of school!  Can you believe how fast summer flies by?!?!?
