Decor for our New Nest!

Good Morning!

After a very frustrating weekend full of false labor, I’m happy to turn my attention to decorating my new house!  I’ll try to get some pictures up soon, but let me tell you….the house looks AWESOME!  It has walls.  It has siding.  It has cabinets and sinks and crown molding!!!!!  In short, it is looking like a real house now!  Since Loo Loo is here, I decided to take advantage of her last Thursday and take her decor and furniture shopping.  We went to several fabric stores looking for color inspiration (we wanted most of the rooms in the house to “coordinate” using like colors and color families)….this is all new to me, and this is why we need Loo Loo.  I do not have a good decorating bone in my body.  Sure, I know what I like (See my Pinterest Page at the top), and what I don’t like….but when it comes to starting from scratch and being creative…..I just don’t have it.  But, I’m an excellent copycat! =)

Here are some of the fabrics we liked (keep in mind we were looking for our color scheme…something to base pillows, rugs and curtains off):

Obviously, we were drawn to beiges, light blues, teals, dark blues and whites.  We decided that with our SUPER dark (almost black) cabinetry in the open kitchen, VERY dark (like expresso) furniture and KINDA dark (like a maple color) floors….we needed some lighter colored fabrics with dark and light prints.  So here are the specific fabrics we chose…

We wanted to keep a little bit of the red, so we’d be able to use some of our current accent pieces (vases and such) and it would still go with the mostly blues theme.  We also plan on making or recovering our own pillows and using fake roman shades in the hallways with the striped fabric used as ties against kind of a linen or canvas fabric (in a lighter beige color) for the stairwell windows.  We’ll also throw in some solid colors too.

As for furniture, our only MUST HAVE pieces will be a white dresser for Jayna (which we will probably get from IKEA, to match her bed), barstools for the kitchen counter and a hutch/sideboard piece for the breakfast area for more storage.  We went to Nadeau, our favorite furniture store and found the PERFECT hutch….tall enough that we won’t have to worry about finding art or a mirror to hang above, deep enough for some of my massive platters and pitchers, and the EXACT color to match all these blues we found!  It’s even white washed on the inside to provide a little more rustic feel!

But alas, nothing is going right for me this weekend.  Apparently we were not meant to be together.  We found it on Thursday, needed to mull it over for a couple of days (and focus on crazy false labor!), and when I called to place it on hold this morning…..was told that it SOLD on Saturday.  And no, they don’t order more….these are all one-of-a-kind pieces.  So we are back to square one for kitchen storage. =(  So sad.

We also considered a couple of little console tables for our entry hallway, but decided that there really isn’t room for anything there.  But I still think they are cute!

We also found this piece (before we saw the blue hutch), that we considered….same price range, but it would need to be refinished as it had a greenish paint tint to it that wouldn’t have matched at all.  It also didn’t have as much storage as the other one, and no glass windows to prevent little hands from grabbing what I need to store on the shelves.

I’m seriously considering making the loft in our new house into my crafting/sewing room.  So when I saw this table….I just about died!  I love it!  It’s huge, but manageable for our not-so-big loft, and it has drawers on both sides for lots of storage.  I also love the antiqued white color, I’ve always wanted that in my house, but it doesn’t go with my DARK furniture downstairs.  Here’s my chance!  I guess I need to make a decision quickly before it sells too!

That’s about it for our finds this week, but I’m hoping to get back out there on Wednesday (provided Amelia doesn’t show up before then) with Loo Loo and look some more….still hunting for bar stools!  Tomorrow is Meet the Teacher and Thursday is the first day of school!  Can you believe how fast summer flies by?!?!?

Also, I’m trying to build up my subscribers, so please search for me on Facebook by typing in Palmettos and Pigtails and “Like” me!

Night Owl

Yes, your time stamp is correct.  It is currently 2:27 am and I am wide awake.  As in doing laundry, eating a bowl of Cinnamon Toast Crunch, watching infomercials, and contemplating sewing some burp cloths wide awake.  I decided against sewing as my machine is probably too loud for 2:30am.  Instead, I’ve been updating my Pinterest account. AKA web surfing.  I decided to add it to my blog, so you can see what I’ve been finding on my late night mission! It is right under my title, in between the ABOUT ME tab and the RSS feed (which is another way to follow me, by the way!).

If you are too lazy to click on that, or you don’t have a pinterest account….here is a little sneak peek:

 Thanks to  Joy’s Hope

So sue me…I have babies on the brain (and most of the time on my bladder too!).  I love the idea of the cover to protect her from prying eyes and sticky fingers!  Just need to find a pattern now….

Thanks to Go Vegan Meow!

Doesn’t this 7 layer dip look yummy?  This is pretty much our go-to appetizer to bring to any function, with a couple of twists on the recipe it looks like.  But I have never seen it made in individual servings…why didn’t I think of that?!?!?

Thanks to Two Friends, Two Cities

How beautiful is this? ‘Nuff said!

Thanks to Miss Lovie

For some reason, I have been into crafty wreaths lately.  It’s probably my off-shoot of recent obsessions with front doors as well.  Or maybe its just how I’m nesting lately!  I really like this one, and feel like I could totally make that!!

Ok, check out my Pinterest boards to see more eye candy!  In the meantime, I’m going to switch the laundry and maybe bake some cookies!

A Blessing in Every Room

We stopped by the house today to check on the progress.  Supposedly AC and plumbing are in, and we are meeting with the builder on Thursday to do our Pre-Drywall walk-thru before they put in electricity and wall everything up.  When we were in Georgia in May, our Aunt Robin showed us the fabulous thing they did when they were building their house…..and we decided to copy it!  Imitation is the highest form of flattery right?! =)

I went on Amazon and found this book:

And, since we had seen this book originally at Robin and Bill’s house, we knew it would be the perfect place to start recording our own memories in the new house!  In addition to little write-in areas, the book also has some appropriate Bible verses for each room listed.  So we piggy-backed off of Robin and Bill again and went over to the house today to write some of the verses from the book, and some of our favorites from The Book, on the foundation and studs in each of our rooms.  Check it out:

Sorry for the sloppy handwriting…..in the garage.

Sorry for the kind of boring pictures, but I wanted to share our little secret blessings we’ve added to our house.  Because as of next week, walls will be up!  Thanks for bearing with me!

Construction Update!

It is sooooooo exciting to see wood going up!  Here’s photos from last week!

As of Sunday, July 10th….first floor is done!

My glorious living room windows!  (Now I just need a curtain tutorial!!)

As of Tuesday, July 12th…sorry there aren’t more detailed pictures, but it was 102 degrees and there were about 10 guys working on the house, so I didn’t want to delay them by poking around!

Andy, our construction manager says that all of the framework will be up and plumbing, electrical and A/C will go in this week, and then drywall next week!!!

I stopped by yesterday after hours and walked through with Jayna to take some detail pictures for Dave.

July 18th

Back Porch (will be screened in)

Side yard, where Maggie’s dog run will be

Other side with the bigger yard for playing

We’ll be removing a few more trees from side and back yard to create more of an open space

Sorry for the crummy picture….here is our living room-I was trying to get the sun in the picture so we’ll know about how much light will be coming in

Kitchen (island), which is opposite of the living room

Playroom, with sun shining (very!) brightly through the window!!!

FROG, again with lots of light….we’ll definitely need curtains in here!

Thanks for bearing with my pictures…..it’s harder than you’d think trying to take meaningful pictures of studded rooms that virtually all look the same at this point, all while watching out for a certain two-year-old who was much more interested in the rusty nails and spikes in the walls!  Stay tuned for more as we get walls next week!

Construction has Officially Begun!

After 2 builder consultations, 6 phone calls, 18 trees saved, 1000′s of design choices, 9 design choice changes, 30 site visits to the model home and our lot, and 3 months of waiting patiently for something to emerge from the dirt pad…..it happened!  The foundation was poured, wood was delivered and construction has begun!

Ok, I made up most of those statistics, and in reality, the process has been painless so far…..but we were just soooo anxious for it actually to begin!  We are trying to take pictures throughout the building, so bear with our ton of pictures from now until mid-September when we are slated to close!

View from the median…watch the progress on our neighbor’s house too!

Pad was completed on June 20th

Stay tuned!

Weekending

Ugh. It. Is. Hot. When did summer arrive?  It’s like God flips a switch around the last week of school every year and it goes from being high 70′s/low 80′s and breezy to mid 90′s, high humidity and 100% chance of sweat.  Or maybe it’s just horomones.  Either way, my fingers are officially sausages and I had to finally take off my rings for fear of never getting them on or off again!

To celebrate the end of the school year, Jayna and I went strawberry picking last week!  She was much more interested in playing in the dirt, running up and down the aisles, and eating the berries…but I had fun picking!  And it’s always nice to have a refrigerator that smells like fresh berries for a week or so!

We walked our lot last week with our builder, reserving trees and seeing where the house will sit on the lot.  It’s been exciting to watch as the house next door gets framed.  So far, our timeline is for trees to get cleared this week (don’t worry, we saved ALOT!) and foundation gets poured next Friday!  Dave and I have determined that the layout and finishes that we have chosen for the new house, warrent some new furniture and decor.  We have some great, quality stuff that we have acquired since we got married, but it’s matched with older crappier furniture and knick knacks that we’ve just allowed to accumulate.  So, we are taking it one drawer at a time, one room at a time…..cleaning it all out!

We went antiquing yesterday….not that we are neccesarily looking for antiques, but we enjoy the look and feel of the older “stuff.”  So, we took advantage of the plethora of antique malls in our area and window shopped a bit to get a feel for the look we are going for.  Here is some of the stuff we found!

I wish we had found this to use at our wedding…we loved the one we had, but this would have been waaaaaay cooler with a big picture of us and littles of our family….here’s a reminder for those of you who have no idea what I’m talking about:

It was our favor/table assignment table, and it had all of our parents’/grandparents’ wedding pictures alongside ours.

For out front?

For Dave’s sea-themed Man Cave? =)

Storage in kitchen nook or dining room?

Just thinking of you GP!!

Loved the bench and the lanturns!

Jayna lobbied hard to take the “cute little baby chickies” home!

For the garden?

We are loving this as a sideboard in the kitchen nook….wide shelf perfect for bigger appliance storage inside….What do you think about the grey-will it go with all of our brown earthy tones?

I’m thinking with a little refinishing, this will be good toy storage in the playroom.  With cute baskets?

On a separate note, my cousin-in-law Heather is contemplating  summer reading.  She is hooked on a teen book series and is looking for suggestions on her site, The Newly Knotted.  I’d like to give a reluctant shout-out to addictive smutty teenie-bopper series….as I recently was hooked and read the ENTIRE Pretty Little Liars Series by Sara Shepard.  And that was before I even realized that it was a hit show on ABC Family (which, the books are sooooo NOT pre-teen/family oriented…but the series is a wee little better-still smutty, but not as graphic).  Anyway, I’m sorry to say I got hooked on them!  As for a couple of other recent favorites I’ve read….Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen and The Help by Kathryn Stockett were definately two I’ve recently enjoyed, as was Love Walked In by Marisa de los Santos.  All three a much mature read than the Liars series….if you are into that!

What are you reading this summer?  Read anything good lately?

House Update…Finally!

If you have lost track of our housing journey, here is the synopsis:

Our house hunt began about a year ago.  Sure, we have been obsesssive about www.agentowned.com’s interactive map of properties for years, but our serious hunt began last summer.  We tried out a couple of agents, and finally settled on our favorite, Susan.  We listed our house in early fall, and have had TONS of action on it.  It’s sporadic, but we’ve averaged about a showing a week since we listed it, which is awesome.  We’ve also gotten really great feedback….our only negative comments have been things we can’t change, like the size of our spare rooms, how our development doesn’t have a pool, etc.  So it’s been pretty frustrating that we’ve had roughly 40 showings (give or take), and everyone liked our house.  Emphasis on “liked.”  As in, “not loved.”  Or at least, “not loved” enough to buy it!  We haven’t had a single offer put down!  Grrr!  But….its ok, because we feel like we will ultimately lose money by selling it, and the rental market is still pretty hot in our area.  So, we are kind of leaning toward renting it by the end of the summer, if we don’t sell it by then.

In the meantime, we have looked at 6,325 houses in our town.  We love our town, and know the neighborhoods inside and out and know exactly where we want and don’t want to live.  Yes, we are picky!  We found a blue house in the newer part of an old, but very good neighborhood that was on .60 acres (which was huge for that neighborhood), and a corner lot.  We put our hearts and an offer down, but it got vetoed.  Then, we found an older, smaller blue house on a bigger lot out in the country (think: pond and separate garage with living space above on the river!).  We put our hearts and an offer down, but it got vetoed.  Then, we found an awesome newer house in a really desirable newer neighborhood, on the golf course.  It also was blue, with double front porches, a huge spiral staircase and ginormous kitchen.  I mean, my DREAM kitchen!!!  I LOVED IT!  Here’s a terrible picture.

We were completely in love with this house.  We put an offer in on it in January….it was a short sale, so we expected it to take awhile to go through.  After many hoops and loops, and still no word by March whether we had gotten it or not, we decided to move on and keep looking.  We also had just about had our fill of blue houses and heartbreak!  So we started looking in a newer neighborhood a little closer to our current house.  It’s a great neighborhood that has quality houses, lots of sidewalks and paths, a saltwater pool (which is FREE with our HOA dues-no membership required!), a 1800′s farmhouse that doubles as the community center and event area, 3 giant ponds, an outdoor ampitheater, a community vegetable garden and orchards, a playground, and about a million old oak trees throughout the entire community.  It’s in the first phase of development, but that’s almost complete, so Phase 2 will be developing soon.  It also has its own firehouse, YMCA and will soon have it’s own K-8 school.

We had looked at this community back when we first started house hunting, but were a little unsure about how few houses were being built back there because of the recession.  BUT….upon second look in the past few months, business is booming and there were hardly any lots left!  We were able to snag a custom .26 acre lot and found a floorplan that would work perfectly with the lot.  We are just a couple of blocks away from the playground and pool/community center and have a small field across from our house that will be a great additional play space to our yard.

Soooo, we put an offer down……and it was accepted!  I think it was because the house ISN’T blue!!! =) And ironically, the day we got the contract ratified, the previous blue house came back to us and the bank accepted our offer.  Too bad we had already moved on…..you snooze, you lose!

Here’s what our floorplan will look like:

The flex room at the front will have double french doors, and will serve as our playroom while our kids are young….we’ll probably turn it into Dave’s office when we don’t need a playroom downstairs anymore.

On the second floor, Bedroom 2 will be Jayna’s room, and Bedroom 3 will be our nursery.  The studio loft above the garage (the stairs to it are on the opposite side of the house, off of the garage and kitchen), will be Loo Loo’s room while she lives with us, and then be our main guest suite later.  The loft area at the top of the stairs will be an additional family room for us for now…housing the Wii and our board games and such.  Later, when the girls are older, it will be their space for entertaining friends and doing homework (we are ALL ABOUT the open door policy….and the “open wall” of the loft will give them space, but allow is to know exactly what is going on up there!!)

The third floor, is Dave’s Man-Cave.  The only difference between the above picture and the plan we chose is that we opted not to have a bathroom up there, so the bathroom area is all part of the walk in closet.  Unfortunately, there is a ton of space in this house, but not a ton of storage.  So the closet on the third floor will be our primary storage closet for all of our various holiday decor and such.

Here are a couple of pictures that I took of the model home that is already built in the neighborhood (and a couple of pictures are from the builder’s website, but they were closer matches to the elevation we chose).  Their floorplan is flipped, so it’s a bit misleading, but hopefully it will give you an idea of some of the details that we chose in our home as well.

Our backyard will look similar to this (but flipped), but our actual yard will be about twice this size.

This is the Flex room, which will be our playroom….don’t you just love the little bench seat?!?!

Dining Room…ours won’t have the tray ceiling though.

These pics are of the model, but the kitchen finishes we chose (cabinets, counters and floors) look more like this:

Ok, back to the model:

This is the entryway from the garage into the kitchen nook.  The stairs to go up to the FROG (finished room over the garage) are directly opposite the bench.

And here is the FROG (and Loo Loo and Dave checking it out!)…does it meet your approval Loo?

Master Bedroom and bath from the builder website…we opted for no tray ceiling though.  But we’ll have all the tile and the dark cabinets.

I took pictures of the other bedrooms, but wasn’t able to capture the true feel of each of those rooms…the pictures ended up being mostly of the designer’s decor….which we didn’t really like anyway.  Sooooo….if you want to see the rest of the house, you’ll just have to visit come September!

Carolina Pottery

On the way back from Georgia, we stopped at Carolina Pottery to dream shop for our soon-to-be-built house.  The look we are going for is kind of a rustic/modern farmhouse feel.  Think….mixture of old and new furniture, dark woods and light linens.  So, basically nothing like we have in our current house.  My cousin-in-law, Heather (who I am so sad we didn’t get to see this weekend!), has a similar design style to us, so I was thrilled to get ahold of her blog address and peruse her photos and ideas as well!

I can’t wait to be into the house (in September) and decorating!  We may need to invite Heather and Clay over to help us!  Here’s a couple of things that caught our eye at Carolina Pottery:

Hmm…the zebra print isn’t really our style, but we like the bench!

This sign just made me giggle!

I don’t think these are actually for sale, but they sure are cool!

Stay tuned for more pictures and ideas for the new house!

THIS is why we are moving.

If you don’t already know, we are moving.  Or at least we hope to.  Soon.  Our house has been on the market for a couple of months now, and we’ve actually gotten quite a few visits…averaging about one a week-ish.  No offers yet though, mostly because of things we have no control over.  Very frustrating.  Our feedback comments so far have been like this:

“The house shows well, but the neighborhood doesn’t have a pool.”

“The house shows well, but the kids’ rooms are too small.”

“The house shows well, but it’s too far away from my job.”

Well, at least we know our house shows well.  We are extremely good at stashing our clutter in secret locations (the broiler) and using baby wipes to spot mop the kitchen floor (You missed a spot Jayna!!).  Oh well, what can you do?

You may be thinking:

“Shara, you have such a lovely home (that shows well!).  Why in the world would you want to move out of your neighborhood?”

Here is my testimony:

Exhibit A: A nice tidy neighborhood with well kept lawns.

Exhibit B: Classy, simple holiday decorations (please note the porch furniture and leaning plastic picket fence).

Exhibit C: Indoor plumbing.  (Seriously y’all, they are building some tiny houses right behind ours!!!)

Exhibit D: Haha! Just kidding!  This was an amazing house that is on the Bee City property!  Loved the boots!

So, now you know! :)
