The Little Mermaid Birthday Party

I  know, I know.  I promised that I wasn’t going to have anymore birthday parties for awhile.  But my girls do love them some Disney Princesses {especially Ariel!}.  And so when Collective Bias contacted me about doing a party with The Little Mermaid as a theme, I couldn’t resist.  Especially since this all fell right around Amelia’s birthday.  It was PERFECT…I got paid to do what I love!!!

It all started with a trip to Walmart.  Or three.  Normally I stay away from the masses at our three {yes, three!!!} local Walmarts, but I decided to risk a trip on the first day of school.  Moms…THIS is THE day to shop at Walmart.  It was EMPTY.  All the kids were in school, and all the parents were back to work.  Not to mention that EVERYTHING school-related was on sale.  It was awesome!

I headed over to the Disney toy section to hunt for party supplies.  I wanted to get stuff that I could use for the party, but that the girls would still enjoy after the festivities too.  I was surprised at the variety of The Little Mermaid specific toys that were out….personally, she’s always been my favorite Disney Princess {Maybe I identify with her hoarding tendencies?!?}.  I’m glad I went alone..the girls would have had a field day!

I finally settled on the The Little Mermaid Story Set.  It included all of the main characters {even Max the dog!} and were about the same size as Jayna’s dollhouse dolls, so I figured after the birthday party they could live amongst all of the Calico Critters.  I also grabbed a plush Sebastian toy, and an Ariel crown….because every mermaid princess need a crown!!

Even though I only invited our closest neighbor friends {thinking I could keep the party small…}, there ended up being 10 kids from 12 months to 5 years old.  Quite the spread.  So I wanted to make sure I had a few activities that they ALL could enjoy.  I decided to have a sandbox and bury The Little Mermaid characters in it.  An instant hit with the smaller kids during the party {and Jayna and her bestie, C.,  loved it for HOURS after the party!}

The kids also enjoyed “Under the Sea” {aka Limbo} and “Share Sebastian” {aka Hot Potato}.  You can see that Millie didn’t keep her mermaid tail on very long….yes, that’s Jayna’s undershirt and a pair of tiny bloomers that you see on the birthday girl!

We also did a quick and easy craft.  I prepped paper plate fish by cutting out triangles to be the mouth, and glued them to the back to be the tail.  I also cut out foam flippers and fins in various colors, so all the kids had to do was choose colored foam and use crayons to decorate their fish or sharks.  Jayna went a bit overboard on the foam fins, but I love the teeth!

But by far, the photobooth was the hit of the party!  Thanks to my part-time job {and my awesome bosses who hooked me up} at Shutterbooth, I was lucky enough to be able to snag some props for some silly fun in the dining room!

I made the backdrop myself, overlapping construction paper on the wall to make it look like a mermaid tale.  The props were a mix of ocean-themed Shutterbooth props, and handmade foam masks {thanks to Loo Loo!} and beads.

As for the other decor, I kept it pretty simple.  Loo had lots of beach-themed knick-knacks that we put out.

And then I used a mixture of streamers, tissue paper pom poms and tulle to pull together the food table.  I used my brand new Silhouette machine to make the food label cards.

I kept the cake pops simple this time, and it didn’t phase the kids….the key lime flavored cake covered in the white chocolate was an unexpected hit!

And speaking of my little guests, I loved that everyone came in beachy themed clothes.  From Hawaiian prints, to smocked mermaids and appliquéd crabs, everyone got in the spirit.  My girls got creative in the dress up bin, combining licensed Little Mermaid costumes with bikini tops and tutus courtesy of Loo Loo’s closet.

And to make sure that everyone was decked-out, the favors we gave out were the perfect addition to all of the little mermaids.  I made “Mermaid Pearl” hair clips for the girls to take home, and found sea creatures {that grow in water!} for the boys.
